Effective October 1, 2026, CMS is updating the diagnosis coding system ICD-10-CM for fiscal year 2027. The update adds 190 new diagnosis codes, deletes 30 and revises 4.
The FY 2027 code set applies to patient encounters and discharges from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. A visit on October 1 uses the new codes.

What to do now
- Update code pick lists, templates and claim scrubber edits so they use the FY 2027 code set.
- Check that your audit templates and code references are current for dates of service on or after October 1, 2026.
- Review documentation for the added specificity, such as the site of a metastasis or whether cardiomyopathy has a known familial or genetic cause.
Totals vary slightly between published summaries, so confirm the full lists of new, deleted and revised codes in the official CMS files at cms.gov/medicare/coding-billing/icd-10-codes.
